| Rising to 3 000 metres, Mount Mulanje is the tallest peak in south-central Africa. It is an important source of water for almost every river that runs through southern Malawi. Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve was created in 1927, primarily to safeguard the water catchments and to control the extraction of the endemic Mulanje cedar—Malawi's national tree. Forest cover in and around the park is threatened by agricultural conversion, wildfires, fuelwood collection, and invasive species.
